Description

The feature documentary Piece of Mind chronicles the fight for mental health care and normalcy by a mother desperate to save her son with schizophrenia, siblings flabbergasted when their sister is shot by police and survives, and a man living the roller coaster of bipolar disorder interwoven with insights from an emergency room psychiatrist and visually intimate artwork amplifying the urgent need for treatment before tragedy.

Filmmaker Bio(s)

Sheila Ganz, (director, producer) is currently in production on the feature documentary Piece of Mind.  This film comes out personal experience.  Ganz's sister lives with schizophrenia. The agonizing powerlessness that Ganz felt over her sister's need for help drove her to support groups at NAMI, National Alliance on Mental Illness, where she heard many different stories motivating her to make a documentary that profiles the importance of public awareness to end the stigma, and for mental health care and law enforcement to address the complex needs of individuals living with severe mental illness.

Ganz's credits include the Emmy-nominated On Life's Terms: Mothers in Recovery 2014, is currently airing on public television.  Ganz received the City and County of San Francisco Board of Supervisors, Certificate of Honor, and California Legislature Assembly, Certificate of Recognition for "Outstanding contribution for raising awareness about rehabilitation efforts for women battling substance abuse."

Ganz's first documentary, Unlocking the Heart of Adoption, explores the lifelong process of adoption for adoptees, first/birthparents and adoptive parents in same race and transracial adoptions with illuminating historical background. Recipient of the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute's Angels in Adoption Award. The film aired on public television, 2003-2006, and The Documentary Channel, 2012-2014. 
Ganz wrote two stage plays, Pretend It Didn't Happen, about her experience as a birthmother, and Leaving Joe, about domestic violence. Both plays had staged readings in San Francisco. Ganz attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; MA, Interdisciplinary Arts and BA, Sculpture, San Francisco State University.
