Support the Girls

Fiction film Support the Girls

Description

Lisa (Regina Hall) doesn’t love her job, but she loves her “girls”—the staff that she manages at Double Whammies, a Hooters-like establishment—and would do anything to take care of them. When her boss finds out that she is hosting a car wash in front of the restaurant, she gets in trouble, leaving the girls to fend for themselves. Affection is the glue of this ensemble cast, grounded by Hall’s genuine warmth, in this riotous bra-mance about women in the workplace by Andrew Bujalski (Results, Festival 2015).

"[Regina] Hall's performance—tender, tough, empathetic, controlled—crumples from tears to laughter in a blink. It's phenomenal, and even in her character's small triumphs, she never lets the audience forget that women like Lisa have long since stopped hoping for a Hollywood-style happy ending." – Amy Nicholson, Variety

"At a time when the industry clamors for more women directors and female-driven stories, Support the Girls stands out for working beyond the constraints of its male director's point of view. Instead, Support the Girls lays out a complex ecosystem and hovers within its confines, picking up on the subtle race and gender discriminations that, for these characters, has become as common as the air they breathe. The movie's title is a mantra, but it's also a plea." – Eric Kohn, IndieWire
