Clouds of Sils Maria

Maria Enders (Juliette Binoche) is a movie star who rose to fame in the film adaptation of a play, Maloja Snake, about the young assistant of a middle-aged businesswoman and the sexually charged dynamic that helps drive her boss to suicide. Now, many years later, on the eve of the playwright’s death, Maria is being urged—partly by her own younger assistant Val (Kristen Stewart)—to perform in a revival of the play, this time in the tragic role of the older woman. A bright young Hollywood franchise star (Chloë Grace Moretz) will be taking over the role that has defined Maria’s self-image. Mysterious and exhilarating, Olivier Assayas’s new film is a triumph of precision acting—Binoche and Stewart skillfully tune their unique styles in service to the film’s contrasting of youth and experience—as well as a snaking study of sexuality, acting, aging, ambition and the intermingling of art and experience.
